Green Smoothies 101

Hello everyone!

 

I get asked about Green Smoothies A LOT.  I’m thrilled to see more and more people drinking them, whether they learn about them from my coaching or anywhere else. Incorporating Green Smoothies into your daily routine is the easiest, most effective way to start improving your health today!

 

Think of this post as Green Smoothies 101 :)

 

1.  What is a Green Smoothie?

 

It is a blended mixture of mostly leafy greens (spinach, kale, romaine, you can even use spring mix or arugula- whatever you like!), with some water (or ice) and usually a piece of fruit to make it sweeter.  That’s it!  You can make them in any counter-top blender.  You can sub ice for water if you like it colder, and you can use ANY leafy greens your heart desires. Get creative and make smoothies that YOU enjoy! The only requirement is a 3:1 ratio of greens to fruit- if your smoothie is all fruit, it will be WAY too high in sugar, and you won’t get the benefits of the greens.

 

2.  Why are Green Smoothies good for me?

 

I could write a book on this!  Many sources say that the nutrients found in leafy greens are among the greatest deficiencies in the Standard American Diet (SAD- and indeed, it is sad!).  By drinking a Green Smoothie for breakfast each day, you can ensure that you are getting a huge helping of green ‘n leafies right then each morning.

 

Green ‘n Leafies contain TONS of:
- vitamins
- minerals
- fiber
- chlorophyll
- oxygen
- water
- phytonutrients (special plant-specific nutrients that carry oxygen and other goodies to our cells)

 

So, Green Smoothies do the following:
- nourish
- hydrate
- energize
- “clean you out”
- alkalize your body (diseases and inflammation cannot survive in an alkaline environment- but we’ll save body alkalinity for another post!)

 

3.  What are some easy Green Smoothie recipes?

 

The “Go-To”
2-3 BIG handfuls of organic baby spinach
1 banana
1/2 a lemon
1 1/2 cups of water
- blend until smooth

 

Pear-Ginger
2-3 BIG handfuls of organic baby spinach
1 ripe green pear
3/4 inch of peeled, fresh ginger
juice of 1/2 a lemon
1 1/2 cups of water
- blend until smooth

 

Tropical
2-3 BIG handfuls of organic baby spinach
1 small ripe mango (no skin or pit)
1 1/2 cups coconut water
juice of 1/2 a lemon
- blend until smooth

 

(Any)berry-Banana
2-3 BIG handfuls of organic baby spinach
1 ripe, small banana
1 small handful of any berry (strawberry, blueberry, etc.)
1 1/2 cups of water
- blend until smooth

 

The Non-Sweetie (better for people who are Diabetic or don’t like sweet drinks)
2-3 big handfuls of a baby spinach- kale combo
1 ripe red pepper
1/2 avocado
juice of 1/2 a lemon
1 1/2 cups of water
- blend until smooth

 

4.  How will I feel if I start drinking Green Smoothies?

 

Common, fabulous side effects include:
- energy!!!
- mental clarity
- more frequent, complete eliminations (yeah, I mean you’ll have great poops!)
- weight loss
- clearer, brighter skin
- less coffee/caffeine cravings
- total-body hydration, which means less headaches and smoother skin

 

 

In short, I’ll say it again:  Green Smoothies are the easiest way to start improving your health today.  I’ll be uploading a video of how easy they are to make soon, along with another Green Smoothie FAQ.  But, hopefully this is enough to get you started.  Green Smoothies are the sh!t, they will change your life!
